### The light is already going when these songs begin: ten folk recordings from the 1970s, moving through belief, shelter, weather and the small distances between one person and another.

---

At first there is a voice addressing something beyond the room. Worship, praise, perhaps only the old habit of lifting the head when there is nobody else to answer. The recording is small enough that the gesture never becomes ceremonial. You can still hear the person making it.

Someone else enters. *Let it be you*: the scale contracts immediately. Whatever was directed upward is brought back to the distance between two people, close enough for hesitation to matter.

Heaven appears soon afterwards, though not as somewhere reached. It remains above the song, an available word, while below it there are rooms, gardens, a road leading towards a village. By then evening has begun to settle into things.

The village is green in the way old places sometimes remain green after the light has gone from them. Grass has grown beyond the point at which individual blades can be distinguished. A gate, a wall, perhaps the side of a house; cultivated ground beginning to loosen at its edges.

November leaves something red among it. Rose hips survive after softer growth has collapsed, small hard fruits on branches already thinning for winter. They belong to a landscape that is no longer entirely summer and not yet bare.

Sorrow arrives without changing the scenery. It alters the distance from which it is seen.

Then weather takes over. Air moves across whatever the songs have assembled so far, reducing houses and paths to temporary arrangements. Rain follows, not dramatically. It catches in grass, darkens soil, fills the shallow places in a road. For a few minutes the landscape seems to make its own recording.

Something harder remains underneath: stone, mineral, the possibility of cutting a surface until another surface appears inside it. The pastoral has never been soft all the way through.

By the last song there is very little distance left to cross. No village needs naming, no horizon needs opening. Two positions remain, one facing the other, while outside the grass has almost disappeared into the dusk.

**worship → you → heaven → old green village → rose hip / November → sorrow → weather → rain → diamond → I to I**
